7th February 2025

Local Talent Makes Remarkable Progress at Boccia

This month, I had the opportunity to speak with Niamh M, a local Boccia player who has been steadily making progress in the sport. Having played for a few years, Niamh is passionate about Boccia and is now setting her sights on new challenges. We discussed what first inspired her to take up the sport, her advice for those looking to get involved, and her long-term goals.

How did you first hear about Boccia, and what inspired you to join the sport?

I first heard about Boccia when I joined Valence School, I was eager to explore and give every sport a try. As I participated in various activities, I found myself drawn to Boccia in a way that felt natural and exciting. The strategic elements of the game, combined with the inclusive environment, made it a perfect fit for me. Over the years, I have played Boccia consistently, developing my skills and forming lasting friendships through the sport. It has become a significant part of my life, and I truly enjoy every moment spent on the court.

What do you enjoy most about playing boccia?

What I enjoy most about playing Boccia is the sense of community it creates. Being part of the Boccia group has really helped me in several ways. Socially, I've met some lovely people who share a passion for the game. Physically, it has improved my coordination and focus, allowing me to develop my skills over time. Emotionally, being part of this supportive group has boosted my confidence and provided a positive outlet for stress.

Overall, boccia has enriched my life in many ways, and I cherish the experiences and friendships I've gained through it.

What are your short-term and long-term goals in boccia?

My short-term goal in Boccia is to continue teaching the students at Canterbury College about the importance of this type of sport. I want to help those who may not be really engaged in sports feel like Boccia is a space they can be a part of. In the long term, I hope to foster a more inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and encouraged to participate, regardless of their skill level. It's important to me that all students recognize the value of boccia and the joy it can bring.

How has the support from PCAS or others around you made a difference in your journey?

The support from PCAS and others around me has made a significant difference in my Boccia journey. Having a strong network of encouragement and guidance has helped me develop my skills and confidence in the sport. The camaraderie and motivation from teammates and coaches have not only made training more enjoyable but have also pushed me to strive for improvement. This support system has been invaluable in helping me overcome challenges and stay committed to my Boccia goals.

Who inspires you most in the world of sports?

Ade Adepitan is my biggest inspiration in the world of sports. His incredible journey, resilience, and achievements in adaptive sports motivate me to push my own limits and strive for greatness. Watching him compete and advocate for inclusivity in sports has shown me the power of determination and the importance of representation. I admire how he uses his platform to inspire others and create opportunities for those with disabilities, and I hope to follow in his footsteps by making a positive impact in the Boccia community.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining a boccia group for the first time?

If you're considering joining a boccia group for the first time, my advice would be to just go for it! Don't worry about your skill level; everyone is there to learn and have fun. Embrace the opportunity to meet new people and be part of a supportive community. Take your time to understand the rules and techniques, and don't hesitate to ask questions. Remember, boccia is not just about competition; it's also about enjoying the game and building friendships. So, give it a try, and you might find it to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience!
