Be a Leader - David Benson
1st August 2024
In 2022 the Royal Mencap Society, a UK-based charity dedicated to working with people with learning disabilities, invited David to join their “Be a Leader Course”. They nominated David for his leadership skills and believed he would make the most of the course.
The course covered: politics, history of learning disabilities, and government issues. During his time on the course, he met with Labour MP Rosie Duffield, to discuss her role. David said “It was very very interesting and inspiring to be a leader”
David had this to say about his course “ I enjoyed everything about the course and always attended. I graduated a year later and had a ceremony, I felt very important. We had guest speakers, drinks and food. It was a very special moment for me as both my foster parents were there to see me. As I was highly dedicated to the course they have invited me back to next years graduation to be a guest speaker
The hardest challenge for me was getting up early but I managed to adapt and overcome this challenge quite quickly. The course has given me more confidence, the ability to speak publicly, listen to others, and become calmer when attending to new things. If I had to give words of encouragement to others who are thinking about doing this course I would say: You’ve got this, go for it and be yourself.
I'm very passionate about equality in sports, so I’m hoping to use my qualification to get a job in coaching and coach my local team. I would like to help others be more active and get them into sports”
